Explosion derails Turkish cargo train

Eight cars of a cargo train in eastern Turkey were derailed Monday by a mine believed to have been planted by Kurdish militants, according to Turkey’s state railway company.

There were no reports of injuries in the blast, which occurred between Alp station and Erzincan, according to Turkish State Railway (TCDD). The train was carrying passengers and cargo, including military equipment and vehicles, from Divirgi to Erzincan, the railway said.

The mine was believed to have been planted by the Kurdistan Workers Party, or PKK militants.

Efforts were underway to reopen the railway Monday, the railway said.

Clashes between Turkish security forces and the PKK have escalated since the PKK ended its unilateral cease-fire on June 1. The organization has been battling the Turkish government since the early 1980s. An estimated 30,000 people have been killed.
